However, monkey superstition claims that the spirits of the dead sometimes fail to reincarnate and linger on as Pretas, hungry ghosts. Pretas are driven by a strong emotional distress and are able to manifest immaterial bodies of air and akasha. These ghosts have an insatiable appetite for the conditions that prevented their reincarnation, be it greed, envy, lust or any other unfulfilled craving. Pretas manifest as floating immaterial monkeys with bloated bellies. Their arms are elongated and clawed, and their necks are likewise long and thin, forever unable to swallow whatever they desire."
